This would be the perfect opportunity for a recent graduate in food science or even someone that is still taking a few classes towards food science, but has a few free days during the week to work.

This person will study under a retiring R&D Manager and will take down notes on all product formulations/processes. Must be extremely organized and able to absorb new information easily. Must be excited about food product development and have a basic understanding of it.

A recent grad in food science is ideal, but a recent grad in science would be ok if they have an interest in food science R&D. This will be a part-time position for a few months to start.

The QC Technician is responsible for the testing of ingredients and materials (including but not limited to raw materials, packaging materials and other assigned materials) throughout the stages of manufacturing process to assure compliance with company product standards and all applicable state and federal standards and regulations. These individual will be responsible for accurate record keeping in sample logs, tracking production lots, water quality sampling, cleaning and sanitalion of laboratory equipment and supplies, testing of sanitary program, and yeast culturing.

Essential Functions:
1. Perform assigned and scheduled laboratory tests on samples of raw materials, intermediate products, and final products in order to comply with company product standards.

2. Perform assigned and scheduled material (including but not limited to, raw material, packaging material) inspection in order to comply with company standards.

3. Keep records of test result.

4. Mix and control concentrations of standard laboratory reagents.

5. Maintain laboratory equipment in good operating condition. Report all necessary maintenance and repair requirements in a timely manner.

6. Maintain chemical reagents inventory.

7. Maintain the cleanness and sanitation of laboratory equipment and supplies.

8. Assist with waste treatment, yeast cultivation and yeast culture transfer.

9. Keep all formulation, ingredients, test methods, and other trade related information in confidence.

Bachelors Degree in Chemistry and/or Food Science related field (or)
Minimum of two (2) years college education with AA Degree, courses taken in Chemistry, Microbiology, or Biochemistry including laboratory procedure, laboratory safety, qualitative and quantitative analysis, and College level Algebra. Bacterial culturing experience is desirable. And minimum of Three (3) years of experience in Food Manufacturing Quality Control Laboratory environment.

Peerbolt Crop Management is a crop consulting business that works predominantly with raspberry, blackberry, blueberry and strawberry growers and researchers in Western Oregon and Southwest Washington. We hire seasonal technicians to assist in scouting for insect and disease presence in agricultural fields.

We have one Salem area position available from late March/early April through August 2013 with the possibility of extension through October based on job performance and workload. This is a temporary, seasonal position with workload varying through the duration of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1) College degree of a scientific nature or currently in school working towards an applicable degree (entomology, horticulture, environmental science, botany etc.) preferred.
2) Experience collecting data on insects/plants in an agricultural setting that demonstrates basic knowledge of insect and disease development (especially if related to small fruit production) preferred.
3) Valid driver license to travel to various work sites.
4) Access to reliable, insured transportation during business hours (employer will reimburse mileage).
5) Ability to perform basic computer functions (Microsoft Word and Excel, email, Internet).

DUTIES: Perform pest management field scouting duties for raspberry, blackberry, strawberry and blueberry systems in designated area. Fulfill data collection requirements using specific scouting methods. Submit data daily to office personnel.

The successful applicant will possess the following characteristics:

1) Ability to traverse uneven terrain and display excellent orienteering and map reading skills.
2) Ability to work outside in adverse weather conditions. Work will usually be solitary in remote locations.
3) Good physical fitness and the ability to maneuver items weighing up to 30lbs.
4) Display strong data collection skills.
5) Successful applicants’ city of residence in proximity to work region will factor into decision making.

HOURS: 25-40 hours per week (overtime is paid at time and a half). The position requires working a flexible schedule during the week depending on job demands and to work nighttime and/or weekend/holidays if needed.
